Jason Florio is currently back at sea, with the MOAS SAR team (search and rescue), onboard the Phoenix , patrolling the waters just off the coast of Libya.

The stormy weather meant that the first couple of days down in the SAR area were quiet but today, as the sea calmed, all that changed and the team has been busy with rescues all morning.

For the next couple of weeks, I’ll be on the first Mediterranean Sea mission of 2016, onboard the Phoenix with the SAR  team once again – and the rescues began almost immediately (images to follow in my next blog post) upon reaching the ‘Dead Zone‘:

Professional search and rescue charity Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) will enhance their life-saving efforts in the central Mediterranean this year by deploying two ships and two drones. The drones will expand their patrolling area to cover what is called the ‘dead zone’: the fatal few miles from the Libyan shore.’ MOAS.EU

I’ll be updating, with more images and words, as and when I can throughout the mission.
